More New Zealanders are being diagnosed with bowel cancer than any other form of the disease.
Figures from the Health Ministry’s show 3,030 people were diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2011, seven more than prostate cancer.
In the previous year, both bowel and prostate cancer were as prevalent as each other.
The report said 1191 people died from bowel cancer in 2011.
The figures have renewed calls for the Government to roll out a bowel cancer screening trial scheme, currently underway in north and west Auckland, nationally.
